The Congress has recognized contributions of the American aerospace industry to America’s security, technological security and economy by establishing this week as National Aerospace Week, and the Aerospace States Association is joining the celebration with a series of events.

State Lt. Governors Celebrate National Aerospace Week September 11-17

The Congress has recognized contributions of the American aerospace industry to America’s security, technological security and economy by establishing this week as National Aerospace Week, and the Aerospace States Association (ASA) is joining the celebration with a series of events.

The aerospace and defense industry employs more than 800,000 workers across the nation and supports more than two million middle class jobs and 30,000 suppliers in all 50 states. The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) reports that the industry tallied record sales of $214.5 billion in 2010 along with the largest positive trade balance of any manufacturing sector.

“Our nation is facing tremendous economic pressure,” said Alaska Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell, Chair of ASA. “National Aerospace Week is an opportunity to reinforce the value of this important industry across our nation. In these uncertain times, we are doing our part to keep our nation strong and secure, and our aerospace and aviation industries ‘Second to None’.”

Second to None is the multi-year education campaign that the AIA has launched to highlight the value of aerospace and defense to our nation. More information is available at NationalAerospaceWeek.org and SecondtoNone.org.

“National Aerospace Week is also a great day to say ‘job well done’ to all the men and women of the aerospace workforce, and it’s a time to encourage our young men and women to consider a rewarding career in aerospace” Treadwell said. ASA has launched new support for the Real World Design Challenge and Build-a-Plane to help provide youth across the nation with learning opportunities to ensure that the future of America’s aerospace industry is second to none.

The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an annual competition that provides high school students the opportunity to work on real-world engineering challenges in a team environment, while Build-a-Plane is a non-profit organization that partners with the Federal Aviation Administration and other organizations to provide schools with donated aircraft and aircraft kits for their students’ hands-on practice in the building or restoration of a real aircraft.

As ASA celebrates National Aerospace Week, it recognizes aerospace companies in our states for taking great pride in their work and for playing a key role in America’s national defense and economic development.

For more on National Aerospace Week and these organizations, visit www.NationalAerospaceWeek.org.

About ASA. ASA is a bi-partisan organization representing the grass roots of American aerospace and aviation. It is a 501(c) (3) scientific and educational organization whose members include lieutenant governors, governor-appointed delegates and associate members from the aerospace industry, academia, and non-profit organizations. ASA was formed in 1993 to promote a state-based perspective in federal aerospace policy development; to support state aerospace initiatives that enhance economic development opportunities; and to promote student and teacher education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math – especially through RWDC. ASA maintains direct ties to the executive branches of state governments throughout the nation.

Learn more about ASA and how to join as an associate member at http://www.aerostates.org/

Workers to Highlight Industry Around the Country Sept. 11-17

August 22, 2011

Arlington, Va. – Ongoing and emerging security threats, aging civil and space infrastructure, fiscal challenges and keeping and creating jobs all present our nation with enormous challenges. This year’s National Aerospace Week, an event established by Congress, will focus on informing the debate over choices our government will make in the coming months.

The aerospace and defense industry is the lifeblood of America’s industrial base, employing approximately 800,000 workers directly, and supporting more than 2 million middle-class jobs in related fields. More than 30,000 suppliers in the industry provide high-skill, high-paying jobs in all 50 states.

For nearly a century, the aerospace and defense industry has produced the kind of cutting edge technologies and quality jobs that have driven American innovation and economic prosperity. The tagline for this year’s celebration is Second to None, which captures the unquestioned leadership of the industry and the people who work in it.

“Since the Wright Brothers and the dawn of flight, the contribution aerospace has made to America has been a true national treasure,” said AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey. “We are the world’s leader in aerospace and the men and women who provide the backbone of our economy and national security are truly Second to None.”

A series of activities in Washington, D.C. and across the country are being planned. Events hosted by businesses and communities for both youth and adults will showcase the industry’s role in the future high-tech workforce of America and in creating and sustaining high-paying jobs across the country.

For more information on National Aerospace Week and the benefits the industry brings to the nation and economy, visit www.NationalAerospaceWeek.org and www.SecondtoNone.org.

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in a joint appearance with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Tuesday that “excessive” defense budget cuts would have “devastating” effects on the United States’ national security.

Putin pledges to make Russian Aero industry first

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in a joint appearance with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Tuesday that “excessive” defense budget cuts would have “devastating” effects on the United States’ national security.

The defense chief stated that the defense budget should be one source of potential savings, but everything should be on the table in regards to deficit cuts, including entitlement reform and raising taxes. Panetta detailed that more than two-thirds of the federal budget has yet to be reviewed for savings.

The debt ceiling deal struck between Congress and the administration earlier this month calls for initial cuts of $350 billion to defense over 10 years. The deal requires Congress to agree on an additional $1.2 trillion of deficit reduction to avoid triggering automatic cuts including up to $500 billion to national security spending.

Panetta recently penned a message to all Defense Department personnel, explaining that he will do everything he can “to ensure that further reductions in defense spending are not pursued in a hasty, ill-conceived way that would undermine the military’s ability.”

The following day, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, while speaking at Moscow’s International Aviation and Space Show, vowed to keep the development of Russia’s national aerospace industry a top priority. The announcement of U.S. defense cuts also comes on the heels of the Chinese government showing off its first operational stealth fighter. With the Russian and Chinese stealth programs in active development, the United States must continue to pursue new technologies to remain Second to None in aerospace and defense.
